P 66/11: En pragmatisk redaktør

Richard Shusterman (bildet) har redigert artikkelsamlingen om Bourdieu. Han

håper å fremme en potensielt svært så fruktbar dialog mellom Bourdieu og filosofene i den engelskspråklige verden.

Dialogen starter med at en serie forfattere retter filosofisk kritikk mot Bourdieus filosofiske tekster.

Selve prosjektet har noe absurd ved seg. Bourdieu er filosofisk skolert så det holder. Men hans tilnærming både til samfunn og ideer er sosiologisk, historisk, kritisk og refleksiv.  Når Shusterman inviterer Bourdieu til å delta i en fagfilosofisk debatt, bryter han med Bourdieus skeptiske og konkrete tilnærming til alle akademiske felt.

Den skolastiske analysen, uten praktiske eksempler som kan utfordre begrepene, er vanligvis målet for Bourdieus angrep. Hvem er nå disse profesjonelle filosofene? Hvilken illusio er det som holder dem gående?

Målsetting

This book hopes to promote a potentially very fruitful dialogue between Bourdieu and philosophers of the English-speaking world by directing philosophical critique back at Bourdieu’s own philosophical production.

Oppstart

As France’s leading living social theorist, Pierre Bourdieu has already had great impact on the social sciences in the English-speaking world, particularly in sociology and anthropology, where his theories have always been the focus of sustained attention. However, much of Bourdieu’s work is emphatically directed at distinctively philosophical questions (of language, action, knowledge, mind, etc.) and engaging in a rich philosophical dialogue with philosophers past and present.

Avslutning

In exposing philosophy to Bourdieuean critique by granting him entry into the philosophical field, we are in turn exposing his theory to the rigorous critique of those who profess philosophy as their (and implicitly the) chosen profession.

The third book he [Shusterman] authored, Pragmatist Aesthetics (1992) was a big breakthrough in his academic career.

The original approach to the problems of the definition of art, organic wholes, interpretation, popular art and the ethics of taste he presented there brought him international fame (which is clearly evidenced by the fact that Pragmatist Aesthetics has already been translated into 12 languages).

Shusterman’s position was only strengthened by his next works: Practicing Philosophy (1997), Performing Live (2000) and Surface and Depth (2002) in which he continued the pragmatist tradition, raising significant interest, provoking numerous critiques and stimulating debates not only among professional philosophers. In 2004 Richard Shusterman left Temple University to become the Dorothy F. Schmidt Eminent Scholar in the Humanities and Professor of Philosophy at Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton.

Shusterman har også funnet opp en ny filosofisk disiplin – somaesthetics.
